Open Search Console, set Performance to the last 16 months and switch to daily. A core update hit is sharp, usually landing inside one to three days, and it is site-wide rather than confined to a few pages. Check that date against Google’s Search Status Dashboard.

A gradual four to six week slide is usually something else, and a drop limited to one URL pattern is usually a narrower change. Getting this right matters, because the wrong diagnosis sends you down a recovery path that cannot work. Our core update recovery playbook walks through the full check.

Check Manual Actions in Search Console first. If that report is clean, you do not have a penalty. A manual action is a human decision and it has a reconsideration request you can actually file. An algorithmic drop has no notice and no appeal, because no human made a decision about your site. People lose months writing reconsideration requests for drops that nobody will ever read. The difference, and what to do about each, is in do you actually have a penalty.

It means Google fetched the page, looked at it, and decided not to add it. It is not a technical error, which is exactly why it gets misdiagnosed so often. Usually the page is not judged worth indexing next to what already ranks, or the site does not carry enough authority for Google to spend crawl budget on it. Changing crawl settings will not fix it. No update has carried that name since 14 September 2023. There were only ever three: August 2022, December 2022 and September 2023. Google has shipped 17 ranking updates since then, nine core, seven spam and one Discover, and not one of them was a helpful content update. More common than people expect. Injected spam pages, usually gambling or pharma, sit on a real domain and get indexed while the visible site looks completely normal to the owner.
