September 2026 Spam Update: Were You Hit? Dates, What It Changes and What to Do
Finished. The September 2026 spam update ran from 24 September 2026 to 8 October 2026, about 14 days, as Google confirmed on its Search Status Dashboard.
The September 2026 spam update ran from 24 September to 8 October 2026. If your traffic moved between those dates, this page tells you whether the timing fits, what this kind of update actually changes, and what is worth doing now that the rollout has ended.
What Google said
Google posted the update on its Search Status Dashboard at 09:15 Pacific time on 24 September 2026 (21:45 in India). It says the update "applies globally and to all languages", and that the rollout may take up to two weeks to complete. The announcement says nothing about what the update targets, so this page does not guess either.

Is two weeks unusual for a spam update?
Not historically. The three spam updates earlier in 2026 were quick: 19 hours 30 minutes in March, 2 days 1 hour in June and 2 days 16 hours in August. Before that, long rollouts were normal. Of the seven spam updates between October 2022 and August 2025, four ran for about two weeks or longer, and the December 2022 link spam update took 29 days.
| Spam update | Started | Rollout length |
|---|---|---|
| October 2022 spam update | 19 Oct 2022 | 2 days |
| December 2022 link spam update | 14 Dec 2022 | 29 days |
| October 2023 spam update | 4 Oct 2023 | 15 days, 12 hours |
| March 2024 spam update | 5 Mar 2024 | 14 days, 21 hours |
| June 2024 spam update | 20 Jun 2024 | 7 days, 1 hour |
| December 2024 spam update | 19 Dec 2024 | 7 days, 2 hours |
| August 2025 spam update | 26 Aug 2025 | 26 days, 15 hours |
| March 2026 spam update | 24 Mar 2026 | 19 hours, 30 minutes |
| June 2026 spam update | 24 Jun 2026 | 2 days, 1 hour |
| August 2026 spam update | 18 Aug 2026 | 2 days, 16 hours |
| September 2026 spam update | 24 Sep 2026 | 13 days, 16 hours |
It ran for 13 days and 16 hours, close to the full two weeks Google allowed for, which is a return to the older pattern. On its own that does not tell you the update was bigger. What it changed was timing: movement could arrive at any point until 8 October, so a quiet first few days was never an all-clear. Every spam update since 2021 is in our Google update calendar, with dates and rollout lengths from the dashboard.

What a spam update changes
A spam update enforces Google's written spam policies: scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse, expired domain abuse and the rest of the list. It is not a quality judgement. If your drop lines up with a spam update, better content will not clear it. You need to find the part of the site that breaks a policy and remove it.
When recovery can happen
Only after the violation is gone, and usually not quickly, because Google's systems have to see the change first. Removing the cause is the part you control. The full process is in our spam update recovery guide. If the spam turns out to be pages someone injected into your site, that is a hacked site recovery job rather than a content rewrite.
What to do now
- Write down the date. Note the day your traffic turned. Everything after this depends on comparing before and after that day.
- Do not judge it from the rollout weeks alone. Rankings moved around while it rolled out. Anything changed on the site during those two weeks gets tangled up with what Google was doing, so note any such changes before you read the numbers.
- Check Manual Actions first. In Search Console, open Security & Manual Actions. A notice there is a different problem from this update, with its own fix.
- Look at which pages fell, not only the total. A drop across the whole site and a drop on one group of pages point to different causes.
- Compare before and after the whole rollout. Take the same number of days before 24 September and after 8 October, for example 14 days each side. That is the comparison that tells you whether this update moved your site.
Not sure it was this update?
Most traffic drops are not algorithm updates. A migration, an indexing change, a robots or canonical mistake, or plain seasonal demand can look exactly the same on a graph. Rule those out before you rewrite a single page.
